There’s a particular kind of scheme where the deadline feels like a formality until it isn’t, and BICS has the shape of exactly that. The application window is short relative to how much evidence it asks for, and — unusually for a government process — there’s no route to fix a mistake once you’ve submitted.

Applications open on the 1st of October 2026 and close at 11:59pm on the 30th of November. That’s a two-month window, which sounds workable until you look at what’s expected inside it: setting up a GOV.UK One Login business account if you don’t already have one, arranging Companies House officer authorisation so the right person can act on the company’s behalf, pulling together six months of recent electricity bills, documenting each manufacturing site by its Meter Point Administration Number, and assembling evidence that the products you actually manufacture match the eligible HS codes. None of that is quick to gather from a standing start, particularly the electricity billing history if your supplier’s portal isn’t straightforward to pull historical statements from.

After the window closes, the government has said eligibility decisions will be announced in January 2027. Successful applicants then wait a little longer for the exemptions to actually take effect — April 2027 for the Renewables Obligation and Feed-in Tariff relief, with a retrospective one-off payment at that point covering the period back to April 2026, and October 2027 for the Capacity Market exemption. So the full sequence, start to finish, runs from an October application to money landing more than a year later for the last piece of it.

The detail that should genuinely change how you plan around this is the no-amendment rule. The guidance is explicit that applications can’t be corrected after submission, which means the usual approach of “get something in and tidy it up later” simply isn’t available here. If a document is missing, a code is wrong, or a site’s evidence is incomplete, that’s not something to catch after the fact — it has to be right before you submit. Given that, treating the two months before October as a preparation window, not the two months of the application window itself as your working time, is the difference between a smooth submission and a rushed one.
